Welcome to the Faculty of
Aquatic Sciences and Technology Website.The University
of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)
established the Faculty of Aquatic Sciences and Technology
(FAST), making
it a ninth faculty of the University. The other faculties
include: Law; Arts and Social Science; Commerce and Management;
Civil Engineering and the Built Environment; Education;
Mechanical and Chemical Engineering; Electrical and Computer
Systems Engineering; and Science.
FAST was formally inaugurated
on the 30th August 2002 at the special occasion held at
the premises of the former Kunduchi Marine Fisheries Research
and Training Institute (KMFRTI). The event was attended
by the senior officials of the University of Dar es Salaam
and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and Ministry
of Science, Technology and Higher Education. The handing
over ceremony was marked by signing of the Memorandum of
Understanding by the Vice Chancellor on behalf of the University
of Dar es Salaam and the Permanent Secretary on behalf of
the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
The new Faculty has
been established following the integration of KMFRTI, formerly
under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, into
the University of Dar es Salaam. KMFRTI, which was established
in 1971 has been training fisheries personnel (middle level
cadre) to a diploma level (2-year Diploma programme) in
fisheries sciences, which included nautical sciences, fisheries
biology, management, and food technology.
The Faculty of
Science through its Department of Zoology and Marine Biology
has been offering B.Sc. General degree (Marine Biology major)
for many years. However, the Government of Tanzania, recognizing
that these programmes do not meet the current needs and
challenges facing the fisheries sector in the country, approached
UDSM with a suggestion to transfer KMFRTI to UDSM with a
view to improving the quality of the existing diploma programme
and establishing new degree programmes specifically targeting
the needs of the sector
